Charlottesville Tomorrow

From June to August of 2018, I interned at Charlottesville Tomorrow, a hyper-local online news organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was not only a news reporter but also a fellow for the Emma Bowen Foundation, which provides multi-year paid media internships to students of color. That summer, I attended the Emma Bowen annual conference in New York, where I networked with representatives from media companies, received invaluable advice from Emma Bowen alumni and other media professionals, and befriended Emma Bowen fellows from around the country.

During my internship, I wrote nearly a dozen articles, covering land use, transportation, community design, and public education in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area, which can be found in the drop-down menu. For my first story, I interviewed former Virginia Governor Ralph Northam and reported on his visit to the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, which was featured in UVA Today. Three of my stories made the front page of The Daily Progress, Charlottesville Tomorrow’s former partner.

Throughout the summer, I collaborated with my fellow interns to create a long-form multimedia story, “This is home: Community reflects on year since school closure." We interviewed students, teachers, parents, local government officials, and other community members connected to Yancey Elementary School, gathering a variety of perspectives on the school’s importance and the impact of its closing on the Esmont community. I took the initiative of summarizing interviews into mini-articles, making it easier to pull them together into one narrative. I also designed CT’s social media campaign for the project, selecting high quality photos and writing compelling captions. I very much enjoyed interning at CT and am grateful for the incredible amount of journalism experience I gained there!
